Legalization Of Marijuana
Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the world, but it is still widely
illegal. “One out of every 15 high school students smoke marijuana”(Nature, 2005).
“There are no recorded cases of overdose attributed to marijuana”(World Health
Organization). Alcohol generates more deaths than marijuana when alcohol is legal
and marijuana is not. Controversy surrounds the legalization of marijuana as it
becomes more and more useful in the U.S. Marijuana should be legalize for medical
purposes, more available space in prisons for real criminals, and its less dangerous
than other addictive drugs.
As time passes more and more people support the legalization of marijuana.
Some states are calling a reform to legalize marijuana. “In late November
2011, the governors of Washington state and Rhode Island petioned the federal
government to re classify marijuana as a drug with accepted medical
issues”(Biochemical 2011). Marijuana is just a plant that can also be used as
medicine and help prevent diseases. “Medical marijuana use has surged in the 16
states and district of Columbia that allows its use “(Clinical Investigation, 2005).
This shows that marijuana is not harmful because more medical marijuana is being
used for patience that needs it. “It has been suggested in an article published in
nature in Atherosclerosis”(Nature 2005). This contributes to my claim because
marijuana can not only boost up the economy but can also help patience that need it
and get better there for in should be legalize it with laws so minors would not over
use. The goal of legalization is not to make arrests easy to access but rather to make
Galvez 3
our communities safer by regulating this substance. Regulation allows us to take it
from the market, controlling it and better to keep it away from the young ones.
Marijuana should be legalize because it can contribute to more available
room in prisons it will also reduce the crime rate. “In 2007 marijuana arrests were
reached record breaking levels of 872,721 and cost the tax payers $41.8 billion that
year alone”(Gettman 2007). People that are being arrested because of marijuana
should not be in jail because society does not want a pothead in jail they want the
real criminals. “Full comparison 597,447, people were arrested for violent crimes in
2007;clearly 300,000, more people were arrested for marijuana each year
alone”(Gettman 2007). This shows that by legalizing marijuana, prisons going to be
less full, and instead keep violent criminals in jail, instead of allowing them parole
due to overcrowding. Marijuana should be legalize to reduce the crime rate and
have more room available in jails.
Marijuana does not kill brain cells; also there has never been a case of lung
cancer or disease from marijuana use. For more than 4,000 years, cannabis has been
one of the most widely use medicines a research has shown that each year 400,000
people die from tobacco which is legal, 100,000 people die from alcohol each year,
20,000 people die from all legal drugs each year, 15,000 people die from illegal drugs
each year, 500 people die from aspirins each year and marijuana has 0 death when
its illegal (Clinical Investigation 2005). This shows that marijuana is not as harmful
to use compared to alcohol and other legal drugs there for it should be legalized like
alcohol, and tobacco.
In conclusion marijuana should be legalize for medical purposes, more
available space in prisons for real criminals, and it is less dangerous than other
addictive drugs. Legalizing marijuana will help boost the economy and use that
Galvez 3
money for schools. We should sign a pet ion those who are in favor of the
legalization of marijuana and send it to the governor. The goal of legalization is not
to make arrests easy to access but rather to make our communities safer by
regulating this substance. Regulation allows us to take it from the market,
